How to Improve Your Reading Comprehension So That You Can Excel in School
Have you ever watched your child sit at the kitchen table, staring at a blank page, pencil in hand, fighting back tears because they just don’t know how to start?
For over 25 years, I stood in classrooms filled with bright, capable kids who were failing not because they weren’t smart, but because no one had ever taught them how to think through their ideas and put them on paper. And let me tell you, I couldn’t stand watching kids shrink in confidence, thinking something was wrong with them, when really the system just wasn’t giving them the tools they needed.
So I left the classroom and built Back2Basics Learning Co. because kids deserve more than worksheets and test prep. They deserve a roadmap.
My programs break down reading, writing, note-taking, and test prep into simple, bite-sized steps that kids can repeat until it becomes second nature. It’s like giving them training wheels for their brain. They go from staring at a blank page to outlining, writing, and actually being proud of their work.
And here’s the best part: when kids learn how to write, everything else in school gets easier. Reading comprehension, test scores, even their confidence in speaking up in class—it all rises. Writing is the key that unlocks it all.
Now, I’ve taken what I used to do one-on-one and packaged it into an on-demand program that your child can use anytime, anywhere. They can watch teacher-led lessons as many times as they need, practice with templates that guide them step by step, and get support so they’re never stuck alone.
Parents tell me all the time, "My child went from tears and tantrums to handing in essays with confidence. They actually enjoy writing now." And that’s why I do this.
Don’t let another school year slip by. Let’s give them the tools and confidence to succeed—not just in school, but in life.
Click to get started today, and let’s unlock your child’s full potential together.
Writing is the antidote to reading comprehension issues.
Knowing the structure of a nonfiction text will inevitably help a child master skills that are assessed on a reading comprehension test.
Students will learn how to...
✏️identify the parts of an essay
✏️identify the structure an author uses to construct a paragraph
✏️identify the hierarchy of ideas and so much more!
ANNOTATING NOVELS
Learning how to annotate is essential for reading comprehension success.
Annotating helps you clearly see the main points the author constructed to elaborate on his/her claim or thesis.
Annotating is also know as active reading, which is a strategy for retaining information and achieving a deeper understanding of what was read.
Knowing how to take notes as you read will help you get the right answer quicker because you've left landmarks that you can go back to.

TEST PREP
Test-taking skills are so important and often overlooked and undertaught.
If you know how tests are created, you get a different perspective on how to engage with it.
Students need to learn how to
✏️restate a question so that they can use that question as a guide to finding the answer.
✏️annotate or actively read a text to leave landmarks in the form of main ideas so that the section they need is visible and easy to identify.
✏️use the process of elimination to kick out the imposters aka wrong answers first.
✏️justify their answers before moving on.
